Phonics
At 91勛圖厙 we believe that all our children can become fluent readers and writers. Therefore, we teach reading through ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme. We start teaching phonics in Reception and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school. At 91勛圖厙, we also model the application of the alphabetic code through phonics in shared reading and writing, both inside and outside of the phonics lesson and across the curriculum. We have a strong focus on language development for our children because we know that speaking and listening are crucial skills for reading and writing in all subjects
Our programme overview shows the progression of Grapheme-Phoneme Correspondence (GPCs) and tricky words that we teach term-by-term. The progression has been organised so that children are taught from the simple to more complex GPCs, as well as taking into account the frequency of their occurrence in the most commonly encountered words. All the graphemes taught are practised in words, sentences and in fully decodable books. Children review and revise GPCs and words, daily, weekly and across terms and years, in order to move this knowledge into their long term memory.
At home to support your child's phonic and reading development, your child’s reading books will match their phonics phase of learning. Your child will bring home two types of reading books:
Reading practice book: this book has been carefully matched to your child’s current phonics phase of learning. If your child is reading it with little help, please do not worry that it is too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading. Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they are struggling to read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together.
Sharing book: in order to encourage your child to become a lifelong reader, it is important that they learn to read for pleasure. The sharing book is a book that they have chosen for you to enjoy together. Please remember that you should not expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun!
The resources on this page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.
Phonics Screening Check
The phonics screening check is a short assessment to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. Children in Year 1 are required to complete a phonic screening assessment in the summer term. Children who do not reach the required standard at the end of Year 1 receive additional phonics teaching in Year 2 and will have the opportunity to re-sit the phonics screening test at the end of Year 2.
It is a statutory requirement for all schools to carry out the phonics screening check. Please follow the link below to see the previous phonics screening checks.
